Tuna Rice Bowl with Yum Yum Sauce

A Note on This Recipe

Yum Yum Sauce is one of those things you’ve probably had at a Japanese steakhouse and never thought to make at home — but it’s surprisingly simple and makes a can of tuna taste like a proper meal.

The sauce is creamy, slightly sweet, and tangy with a little heat, and it comes together in about a minute with pantry staples. Mixed into canned tuna and served over warm rice with cucumber and a soft-boiled egg, it turns a humble ingredient into something genuinely satisfying. The sauce recipe makes two servings, so you’ll have extra in the fridge for the next day.

How to Make It

Prep the Ingredients

Begin by cooking your rice if it’s not ready. For an extra protein boost, you can also hard-boil some eggs. Thinly slice a mini cucumber for the topping and finely chop the green onion for the tuna mixture.

Make the Sauce

In a bowl, combine all the Yum Yum Sauce ingredients and whisk until smooth and well blended. This recipe makes enough for two servings, so set half aside for the tuna mixture and keep the rest in the fridge for tomorrow.

Prepare the Tuna Mixture

Drain the tuna and add it to a small bowl. Add the chopped green onion and about half of the Yum Yum Sauce. Flake the tuna and mix thoroughly to combine.

Assemble the Rice Bowl

Add about 1 cup of warm rice to a bowl. Top with the tuna mixture, cucumber slices, and a halved boiled egg. Serve with toasted seaweed snacks on the side for wrapping bites or adding extra salty, umami flavor.
